Flexibility is the passive range of motion available at a joint, measured when an external force moves the limb rather than the client's own muscles. It is one component of mobility and is trained mainly through static, dynamic and PNF stretching.

Flexibility: what is it?

Flexibility is the oldest fitness quality on the list and the one clients most often ask for by name, usually because they cannot touch their toes. It is worth being precise about what it means: the range a joint can be taken through by an outside force. It is genuinely trainable, it is joint-specific rather than a whole-body trait, and it matters far less for injury prevention than most clients believe. Where it does matter is when a lack of range blocks a position the client actually needs.

What actually limits range

Muscle and connective tissue length is only part of it. Joint structure sets a hard ceiling that no amount of stretching moves, which is why two clients with identical training can have very different hip range. And a large part of short-term flexibility is neural: the nervous system limits range through protective tension, which is why range improves within a single session long before any tissue could have changed.

That neural component explains a lot of what clients experience. The fast gains in the first few weeks of stretching come mostly from increased stretch tolerance, meaning the client tolerates more range at the same tension. Genuine structural change is slower and needs consistent exposure over months.

How much flexibility does a client actually need?

The useful question is never "is this client flexible" but "does this client have enough range for what they are trying to do". A powerlifter needs enough ankle and hip range to squat to depth with a stable spine. An office worker with back pain needs enough hip extension to stand tall. Neither needs the splits.

Set the target from the movement, and stop chasing range once the movement is available. Range beyond the requirement is a hobby, which is fine as long as the client knows that is what they are doing.

The injury-prevention claim, honestly

The traditional promise is that stretching prevents injuries. The evidence for that is much weaker than the promise, and general stretching programs have not been shown to reliably reduce injury rates in the way strength training has. Where a specific lack of range forces a compensation in a loaded position, restoring that range is genuinely useful. Where it does not, adding stretching in the hope of protecting a client is mostly wishful.

This is worth saying out loud to clients, because it changes what they prioritise. If a client has 20 spare minutes a week and wants to stay healthy, strength work through a full range buys more than a general stretching routine.

Training it

All three stretching families change range: static stretching held at the end of a session, dynamic work in a warm-up, and PNF techniques that use a contraction to gain range. What matters most is consistency and exposure, not method purity. A few positions held for a total of a minute or two each, most days of the week, produces change over a couple of months.

Resistance training through a full range does the same job while also building strength, which is why it should carry most of the load in a general client's program. Reserve dedicated stretching for the specific restrictions that are actually blocking something.
