Isolation exercise
An isolation exercise is a single-joint movement that targets one muscle group, such as a biceps curl, leg extension, lateral raise or calf raise. Isolation exercises use lighter loads than compound lifts and are placed later in a workout to add volume to a specific muscle.
Isolation exercise: what is it?
Isolation exercises get dismissed as vanity work, and used badly they are. Used well, they solve problems compound lifts cannot: the rear delts that never grow from rows alone, the hamstrings that get skipped when a client squats but does not hinge, the elbow that needs light direct work after an injury. Because only one joint moves, the load is smaller, the technique is simpler and the client can push close to failure with little risk. That combination is exactly why they belong at the end of a session and not the start.
When an isolation exercise earns its place
A good rule is that every isolation exercise in a program should have a reason you can say out loud. The common valid reasons are: a muscle that the compound lifts under-train (side and rear delts, calves, hamstrings, biceps, forearms); a lagging body part the client specifically wants to develop; a rehab or pre-hab need where a single joint must be loaded on its own; and extra volume for a muscle group when the client is already fatigued from heavy compound work and cannot safely add another heavy set.
What is not a good reason is filling time. Ten isolation exercises after a squat and a row is not a better session than three well-chosen ones.
Isolation exercises by muscle
Most muscle groups have two or three isolation options that cover different positions or angles.

Where they go in the session
Isolation exercises come after the compound lifts. They do not need the client fresh, they do not load the spine much, and pushing them close to failure does not compromise the next exercise. Typical rep ranges are 8 to 20, rest is short at 45 to 90 seconds, and they pair well in supersets: a biceps curl with a triceps pushdown, a leg extension with a leg curl, a lateral raise with a rear delt fly. Supersets cut the time cost, which is the main argument against isolation work in a short session.
The one deliberate exception is pre-exhaustion, where an isolation exercise is done before a compound lift to fatigue a target muscle first (leg extensions before leg press). It is a legitimate hypertrophy technique for advanced clients but it reduces the load on the compound lift, so it should be a conscious choice.
Common mistakes
The classic one is going too heavy and turning a single-joint exercise into a multi-joint one: swinging the torso on a curl, shrugging on a lateral raise, bouncing on a leg extension. The muscle you wanted to isolate does less, not more. Drop the weight, slow the eccentric and keep the rest of the body still.
The other mistake is the opposite: never taking isolation work hard enough. Because the injury risk is low and the movement simple, isolation exercises are the safest place in a program to train close to failure. A set of lateral raises that stops at RPE 6 is barely doing anything.
