1RM (One-rep max)

A one-rep max (1RM) is the heaviest weight a person can lift once with correct form on a given exercise. It can be tested directly or estimated from a multi-rep set, and it is the reference for percentage-based training loads.

1RM: what is it?

The one-rep max is the anchor of percentage-based programming. Every prescription written as "5 reps at 80%" only makes sense against a known max. Coaches rarely need the true number tested on the platform; an estimate from a hard set of 3 to 8 reps is accurate enough for programming and far safer for most clients. Knowing the difference between a tested and an estimated 1RM, and when each is appropriate, is the whole skill.

Tested versus estimated 1RM

A tested 1RM is a single lift under controlled conditions: a full warm-up ramp, a spotter or safety pins, good technique required for the attempt to count. It is the most accurate number but also the most fatiguing and the riskiest, which is why it is mostly reserved for experienced lifters, strength athletes and testing weeks.

An estimated 1RM comes from a set of several reps taken close to failure and a formula. Epley and Brzycki are the two most common, and both are accurate to within a few percent for sets under about 10 reps. Above that, the estimate drifts because muscular endurance starts to matter more than strength. A set of 3 to 6 hard reps gives the best balance of accuracy and safety.

How to test safely

When a true test is justified, the protocol matters more than bravery. Test on a day the client is fresh, on a lift they have practiced for months, with safeties set and a spotter present. Ramp with decreasing reps: a few sets in the 50-70% range for 3-5 reps, singles at roughly 80% and 90%, then attempts in small increments with 3 to 5 minutes of rest between them. Stop at the first missed rep or the first ugly one; there is no value in a second miss.

  • Never test a beginner; estimate from a 5-rep set instead.
  • Test only the main barbell lifts, not isolation exercises.
  • Retest every 8-12 weeks at most; strength does not change fast enough to test more often.
  • Reset the percentages in the program as soon as the max changes.

Common mistakes

The most common error is programming percentages off a max that is months old or was set on a great day, which makes every session heavier than intended. The second is estimating from a 15-rep set, where the formulas are unreliable. The third is testing for its own sake: a client who is not a strength athlete gains nothing from a max attempt that an estimate would not have given them.
