A rest interval is the time between sets or exercises. It determines how much of the previous set's fatigue carries into the next one, and therefore how much load and how many reps a client can produce. Longer rest favours strength; shorter rest favours density and conditioning.

Rest is the variable clients manage worst and coaches prescribe least. Left alone, most people rest by feel, which in practice means as long as the conversation lasts on easy exercises and not nearly long enough on hard ones. Prescribing rest is not micromanagement; it is what makes the sets you programmed actually happen at the load you intended, and it is the difference between a strength session and a moderately heavy circuit.

The most common mistake: resting too little on heavy work

When shorter rest is the right call
On isolation and machine work, where the systemic cost is lower and the target is local fatigue, 60 to 90 seconds is usually enough and keeps the session moving. In conditioning, the rest interval is the prescription, and manipulating the work-to-rest ratio is how the session gets harder over a block.
Paired non-competing exercises are the way to have both. Alternating a press and a row gives each movement two to three minutes of genuine recovery while the client is only ever standing around for a fraction of that, which is how a session with generous rest still fits in an hour.
