Training to failure means continuing a set until no further rep can be completed. Technical failure is the point where form breaks down; absolute failure is when the weight stops moving. It equals RPE 10 or 0 reps in reserve.
Training to failure: what is it?
Failure is the hard ceiling of a set: the rep that does not happen. Coaches use it in two ways, as a training tool on selected sets and as a reference point so a client learns what RPE 10 actually feels like. It drives a strong stimulus, but it also costs more recovery than a set stopped two reps short, so where it lands in a program matters more than whether it is used at all.
Technical failure versus absolute failure
Technical failure is the last rep the client can complete with the form you prescribed: full range of motion, no bouncing, no shifting the load onto another muscle. Absolute failure is the point where the bar physically stops, whatever the form looks like. For almost every client, technical failure is the definition to coach. The extra rep or two that separates the two adds little stimulus and most of the injury risk.
There is also a third, softer version: stopping when bar speed collapses. On a heavy compound lift the rep before failure is a grind, and many coaches treat that grind as the stop signal rather than waiting for a missed rep.
What failure costs and what it buys
The case for failure is simple: it guarantees the last reps of the set were the hard, slow, high-tension reps that drive muscle growth, and it removes any guesswork about effort. The case against it is fatigue. A set to failure produces more local fatigue, more systemic fatigue and more soreness than the same set stopped at RPE 8, and that fatigue reduces the quality of every set that follows in the same workout. Across a week, going to failure on everything usually means fewer productive sets, not more.
The research picture is consistent with that trade-off: sets stopped one to three reps short of failure produce similar hypertrophy per set as sets taken to failure, at a lower recovery cost. Failure is a tool with a price, not a requirement.
Where failure fits in a program
Failure belongs where the downside is small: the last set of an exercise, isolation movements, and machine or cable exercises where a missed rep just means the stack sits down. It does not belong on heavy squats, deadlifts, bench presses or overhead presses, where a missed rep is a safety problem and the systemic fatigue lingers for days.

The most common error is treating failure as proof of effort and chasing it on every set, which quietly caps weekly volume. The second is the opposite: never going near it, so a client rates RPE 8 on sets that were really RPE 5. One supervised set to technical failure on a safe exercise fixes that calibration.
