A warm-up is the preparatory phase of a session that raises muscle temperature, takes joints through their range and rehearses the day's movements at progressively increasing load. A typical structure is five to ten minutes of general and specific work, followed by ramp-up sets.
Warm-Up: what is it?
The warm-up is the most skipped and most misunderstood part of a session. Clients treat it as a formality, coaches sometimes inherit a fixed routine that has nothing to do with what is being trained, and everyone repeats the claim that it prevents injuries. What a warm-up demonstrably does is prepare performance: warmer muscle contracts faster, joints move more freely, and the nervous system has rehearsed the pattern before there is meaningful weight on it. That is enough of a reason on its own.
A structure that works
Three phases cover almost every client, and the last one is the phase most often skipped.

Ramp-up sets are the part that matters most
A client who does five minutes on a bike, some leg swings, then loads their working squat weight has warmed their body but not the movement. Ramp-up sets in the actual lift do the specific job: they rehearse the groove at increasing load, tell you and the client how the day is going, and let you adjust the session before it goes wrong.
They also serve as a readiness test. A load that felt easy last week and feels heavy in the warm-up today is far better information than any wearable score, because it is measured in the exact movement you were about to prescribe.

The injury claim, and the adherence problem
Structured multi-component warm-up programs have shown genuine injury reduction in specific sports contexts, particularly in team sports with a defined injury profile. Extrapolating that to "warming up prevents injuries in the gym" goes further than the evidence, and a general client does not need that promise to be persuaded.
The bigger practical issue is adherence. Long warm-ups are the first thing dropped when a client is short on time, and a warm-up that is skipped protects nobody. Five to ten minutes that always happens beats twenty minutes that happens half the time.
