Body composition is the breakdown of body weight into its parts, most simply fat mass and fat-free mass. It explains what scale weight cannot: two clients at the same weight can carry very different amounts of muscle, fat, bone and water.

Body Composition: what is it?

Scale weight is a single number covering muscle, fat, bone, organs, glycogen and the water bound to it. A client who loses three kilos of fat and gains two of muscle sees the scale move by one kilo and concludes that nothing is working. Body composition is the vocabulary that fixes that conversation. It is also where most measurement error in coaching lives, so it is worth knowing what each method actually measures before you quote a number to a client.

Compartment models

Every body composition method is built on a model of how many parts the body is divided into. The more compartments a method accounts for, the fewer assumptions it has to make, and the more expensive and less accessible it gets.

Fat-free mass is not all muscle

Fat-free mass includes skeletal muscle, but also bone, organs, connective tissue and the large amount of water your client is carrying at that moment. That last part matters enormously in practice: a high-carbohydrate day, a hard training session, a poor night of sleep or the menstrual cycle can move body water by more than a kilo, and every two-compartment method will read that swing as a change in lean mass or a change in fat mass.

This is why a single measurement is close to useless and a trend line is informative. Coaches who chase week-to-week body fat changes end up chasing hydration.

Choosing a method you can actually repeat

The most accurate method available is rarely the right one. What matters for coaching is reliability: does the same client, measured under the same conditions, get the same answer? A method with a consistent bias still tracks change correctly, because the bias cancels out when you subtract.

That argues strongly for standardising conditions and never mixing methods within a client's history. A client who was skinfolded in January and bioimpedance-scanned in March has no comparison, only two unrelated numbers.

  • Pick one method per client and stay with it for the whole engagement.
  • Fix the conditions: same time of day, same hydration and food state, same tester.
  • Report ranges and directions, not decimals.
  • Pair any body composition estimate with girths and photos, which have no estimation error at all.

What to tell the client

Give clients the direction and the size of the change, not a false precision. "Your waist is down four centimetres and your weight is flat, so you have very likely traded fat for muscle" is both honest and more motivating than a body fat percentage with a decimal point that you cannot defend.

Body composition talk also needs a floor. Essential fat exists for a reason, and pushing a general population client toward athlete-level body fat is a health decision, not an aesthetic one. If a client is asking for numbers that low, that is a conversation about goals and, sometimes, a referral.
