Lean Body Mass (LBM)
Lean body mass is total body weight minus fat mass: muscle, bone, organs, connective tissue and body water. It is the part of a client's weight you are trying to protect during a diet and grow during a training block.
Lean Body Mass: what is it?
Scale weight answers the wrong question. When a client drops four kilos, the useful thing to know is what those four kilos were made of. Lean body mass is how you frame that. It is the whole non-fat portion of the body, and it behaves very differently from fat mass: it is metabolically expensive, it is what produces force, and it is much easier to lose through an aggressive diet than it is to rebuild. Most of the practical decisions a coach makes during a fat-loss phase come down to protecting this number while the other one falls.
The calculation
Lean body mass is total weight minus fat mass, and fat mass is body weight multiplied by the body fat fraction. So a client weighing 90 kg at 22 percent body fat carries 19.8 kg of fat and therefore about 70.2 kg of lean body mass. Twelve weeks later at 84 kg and 16 percent, fat mass is 13.4 kg and lean body mass is 70.6 kg: six kilos gone, essentially all of it fat, lean mass intact. That is the story the scale alone could never have told you.
There are also prediction equations, such as Boer, James and Hume, that estimate lean body mass from height, weight and sex without a body fat measurement. They are quicker but they are population estimates, so they are far less useful for tracking a specific client's change over time.
Lean body mass versus fat-free mass
The two terms are used interchangeably in most gyms, and for coaching purposes that is usually harmless, but they are not identical. Fat-free mass excludes every trace of fat. Lean body mass conventionally means everything except stored fat, which leaves in the small amount of essential lipid inside organs, bone marrow and the nervous system, generally a couple of percent of body weight.
The practical takeaway is not to worry about the distinction but to be consistent about which one your measurement tool reports, and never to compare a lean body mass figure from one method against a fat-free mass figure from another.
What coaches actually use it for
Lean body mass turns several vague coaching decisions into arithmetic. It is a better denominator than body weight for anything that scales with metabolically active tissue.

The error you inherit
Every lean body mass figure is a subtraction, and subtractions inherit their inputs' errors. Scale weight is accurate to within a few hundred grams. The body fat estimate is not, and in a field setting it can be several percentage points out. On a 90 kg client, a body fat estimate that is three points too high moves the lean mass figure by nearly three kilograms, which is more change than most clients accumulate in a training block.
The rule that follows is the same one that governs every body composition measure. Same method, same tester, same conditions, and read the direction of travel rather than the absolute figure. A consistent bias cancels out when you subtract two measurements taken the same way.
