Caffeine is a stimulant that blocks adenosine receptors in the brain, reducing perceived effort and fatigue. Used before training it can support endurance, output and focus. Its main coaching cost is sleep disruption, because it stays active in the body for many hours.

Caffeine: what is it?

Caffeine is the supplement almost every client already takes, usually without thinking of it as one. That makes it a different coaching conversation from creatine or whey: the question is rarely whether to start, and almost always how much, how late, and what it is doing to sleep. A client sleeping badly because of a four o'clock coffee will lose more than any pre-workout gains them.

How it works and what it does for training

Adenosine accumulates through the day and produces the sensation of tiredness. Caffeine occupies the receptors adenosine would bind to, so the signal is muted. The fatigue has not gone anywhere; it is being masked, which is why the crash arrives when the caffeine clears.

For training, the most consistent effect is on perceived effort: the same work feels easier, which tends to show up as better output on endurance work and better focus and volume tolerance in the gym. The effect on maximal strength is real but smaller than most clients expect.

Dose and timing in standard practice

Doses used before training are commonly expressed per kilogram of bodyweight, and more is not better. Beyond a point, the additional effect is jitteriness, elevated heart rate and worse sleep rather than better performance.

The sleep cost

Caffeine has a long half-life, which means a meaningful portion of an afternoon coffee is still circulating at bedtime. Many clients insist it does not affect them because they fall asleep fine. Falling asleep and sleeping well are different things, and reduced deep sleep is the part they cannot feel directly.

This is the single most useful caffeine intervention a coach makes. Moving the last coffee earlier, without changing the total, often improves sleep, recovery and next-day appetite control more than any supplement addition would.

A trainer suggesting a high-dose pre-workout to a client with an undisclosed heart condition is a genuine risk, not a hypothetical one.
