Supercompensation: what is it?
Supercompensation is the diagram every coaching course draws in week one: a curve that dips after training, climbs back, overshoots baseline, then drifts back down if nothing else happens. It is a teaching model rather than a measurement, and its value is in the decision it forces you to make. Train again while performance is still depressed and fatigue stacks. Wait too long and the gain fades. Everything in program design sits between those two errors.
The four phases
The model splits the response to a session into four stages. The durations below are illustrative rather than measured constants: they vary enormously with the session, the client's training history, their sleep and their food.

What it means for training frequency
Read as a scheduling rule, the model says the next session should land in phase three rather than phase two or phase four. In practice this is why a muscle group trained once a week often progresses more slowly than the same weekly volume split over two sessions: the second frequency lands closer to the useful window.
It also explains the two classic failure modes. A client who trains hard every single day never leaves phase two, so fatigue accumulates and performance grinds down. A client who trains a lift once every ten days spends most of their time in phase four, repeatedly rebuilding what they already had.
Where the model breaks down
Supercompensation was built around energy substrate restoration and does not describe strength or hypertrophy adaptation cleanly. Different qualities recover on different timescales after the same session: the nervous system, the muscle tissue, connective tissue and metabolic systems are not on one shared curve, so a single line for "performance" hides most of what is going on.
It also cannot be measured directly in the field. No coach knows where a client sits on the curve on a given Tuesday. Treat it as a way of explaining why rest is productive rather than as a schedule you can compute, and use the fitness-fatigue model when you want a picture that handles overlapping sessions better.
