TDEE (Total Daily Energy Expenditure)

TDEE, or Total Daily Energy Expenditure, is the total number of calories a person burns in 24 hours. It is the sum of basal metabolic rate, the thermic effect of food, non-exercise activity and training. Coaches use it as the starting point for every calorie target.

TDEE: what is it?

Every calorie prescription starts from the same question: how much does this client burn in a day? TDEE is the answer, and it is the number a deficit or a surplus is measured against. It is not a fixed property of a body. It moves with bodyweight, activity, job, season and even mood, which is why a coach treats an estimated TDEE as a starting hypothesis to be corrected against real-world weight data, not as a measurement.

The four components of TDEE

TDEE breaks down into four buckets. Their relative sizes vary a lot between people, and the two biggest sources of difference between two clients of the same weight are body composition and daily movement, not training.

How TDEE is estimated

The standard method is two steps: estimate BMR with an equation (Mifflin-St Jeor and Katch-McArdle are the two most used), then multiply it by an activity factor that stands in for NEAT plus training. The activity factor is where most of the error comes from, because clients systematically overestimate how active they are.

A safer approach when body-fat percentage is known is Katch-McArdle, which works from lean body mass rather than total weight. It separates the very lean 90 kg client from the 90 kg client who trains twice a week, which weight-based formulas cannot do.

Why the estimate is only a starting point

Two people with identical height, weight, age and sex can have meaningfully different real expenditure, and the same person's TDEE changes as they lose weight: a smaller body costs less to move and less to maintain, and NEAT tends to drop during a long deficit. That is why a calorie target that worked in week 2 stalls in week 9.

The professional workflow is to use the formula once, then let the scale correct it. Set the target from the estimate, hold it for two to three weeks, average bodyweight across each week, and adjust from the trend rather than from the equation. After a month of consistent data, the observed maintenance is a far better number than any calculator output.

It is also the number to revisit whenever a client stalls. Before adding cardio or cutting calories again, check whether the underlying expenditure moved: fewer steps, a new desk job, a change in training volume, or simply a lighter bodyweight will all shift TDEE down.
