Calves
The calves are the two muscles of the lower leg that point the foot down: gastrocnemius, which crosses the knee and works best with the leg straight, and soleus underneath it, which crosses only the ankle and works with the knee bent. Both feed into the Achilles tendon.
Calves: what are they?
Gastrocnemius is the visible two-headed muscle that gives the calf its shape. It starts above the knee on the femur, so bending the knee shortens it and takes it out of the movement. Soleus sits underneath, starts below the knee on the tibia and fibula, and is unaffected by knee position. Both join the Achilles tendon and attach to the heel. That split is the entire basis of calf programming: straight-leg raises for gastrocnemius, bent-knee raises for soleus, and neither one covers the other.
What the calves do
The obvious action is plantarflexion, pushing the foot down, which is what a calf raise trains. The action that matters more in life and sport is the opposite one: absorbing load. Every walking step, every landing, every running stride starts with the calf and Achilles lengthening under load to control the ankle before returning the energy.
Soleus carries most of that daily work. It is heavily postural, dense in slow-twitch fibres, and handles the repeated low-level force of standing and walking. Gastrocnemius contributes more to fast, powerful actions like jumping and sprinting, and also helps flex the knee slightly.
How to train the calves
Two exercises cover the muscles: one with the knee straight and one with the knee bent. What most programs get wrong is not exercise selection but range and rep quality. Bouncing through a partial range with a heavy stack trains the tendon's elasticity, not the muscle.

Why calves seem stubborn
Calves are not unusually resistant to training; they are unusually well trained already. A client who walks eight thousand steps a day has given their soleus thousands of submaximal contractions before they ever reach the gym, so a few sets of half-range raises add nothing. The stimulus has to be clearly above what daily life provides: full range, a real stretch at the bottom, a pause, and enough load that the last reps are hard.
Tendon proportions also vary between people. A long Achilles with a short muscle belly limits how much visible size a client can build, whatever they do. That is worth saying out loud early rather than letting a client train for a year against their own anatomy.
- Use a step or block so the heel can drop below the toes.
- Pause one to two seconds at the bottom to kill the bounce.
- Pause briefly at the top too; the top half is where the muscle shortens fully.
- Train both a straight-leg and a bent-knee variation each week.
Calves, Achilles and running clients
Runners and jumpers load the Achilles tendon heavily, and the tendon adapts more slowly than the muscle. When a client increases running volume quickly, the calf keeps up and the tendon does not. Slow, heavy, full-range calf work, both straight-leg and bent-knee, is one of the most useful things you can put in a runner's strength program.
Soleus deserves particular attention here because it takes a large share of the load at running speeds and is the one most often skipped. Seated calf raises are unglamorous and they matter. Persistent Achilles pain, however, belongs with a clinician; the training role is building capacity, not managing an injury.

Why do my calves not grow?
Usually range and load, not genetics alone. Daily walking already trains the calves at low intensity, so gym work has to be clearly harder: full stretch at the bottom, a pause, and enough weight that the last reps are a struggle. Tendon and muscle-belly proportions do vary between people and set a genuine ceiling on visible size.
Should calves be trained with high reps?
Moderate to high reps suit them well, roughly 8 to 20 depending on the variation, mostly because the range is short and heavy partials are tempting. Rep count matters less than full range with a controlled bottom position and enough proximity to failure.
Do calf raises help prevent Achilles problems?
Building calf strength and tendon capacity through slow, full-range loading is a reasonable part of preparing a runner for higher volume, and both straight-leg and bent-knee work should be included. It is preparation, not treatment: an existing Achilles injury needs a clinician.
