Erector Spinae
The erector spinae are the columns of muscle running either side of the spine from the pelvis to the skull. They extend the spine, side-bend it, and above all resist flexion: they are what keeps the back from rounding under load in a deadlift, a carry or a bent-over row.
Erector Spinae: what is it?
Three columns make up the group on each side: iliocostalis furthest from the midline, longissimus in the middle, and spinalis closest to the spine. They run from the sacrum and iliac crest up to the ribs, the vertebrae and the skull, in overlapping segments. Because they span the whole back, they are more of a system than a single muscle: the lumbar portion holds a heavy hinge, the thoracic portion keeps the upper back from collapsing, and the deeper multifidus underneath controls movement between individual vertebrae. Coaches see them mostly as the muscles that fail first in a deadlift.
What they do
Contracting both sides extends the spine, arching the back. Contracting one side bends it towards that side and helps rotate it. Those are the textbook actions, and they matter in a back extension or a good morning.
The function that dominates in training is isometric. In a deadlift, a squat, a carry, a bent-over row, the erectors do not lengthen or shorten much; they hold the spine in place while the hips and knees move. That is why a client whose back rounds at a certain load has an erector endurance limit, not a technique problem alone, and why building that endurance changes the lift more than another cue does.
How to train the erector spinae
Most clients already load their erectors isometrically in every compound lift. What they lack is direct work through range and enough endurance to hold position deep into a set. Both are quick to add.

Rounded backs, and what to do about them
A back that rounds under a heavy deadlift is the most common thing a coach flags. The right response depends on where it rounds. Rounding at the upper back under a maximal pull is common and reasonably well tolerated by strong lifters. Rounding at the lumbar spine, especially early in the lift and at moderate loads, is worth changing, because it usually means the client cannot hold the position at that weight yet.
Reducing the load, shortening the range with a block pull, and adding direct erector work is the sequence that works. Back extensions build the range; carries build the endurance; a lighter deadlift lets them practise the position. Telling a client to keep their back straight without changing the load rarely does anything.
The stronger point to make to clients is that a rounded spine is not automatically an injury. Backs bend, and they are built to. What causes trouble is bending under a load the tissue is not prepared for, which is a training-history problem more than a posture problem.
Lower back soreness after training
Erectors fatigue quickly and take a while to recover, which is why a heavy deadlift day can leave a client stiff for two or three days. That is normal after unfamiliar volume, and it is different from pain that appears during a lift or radiates down a leg.
Practically, this argues for spreading erector load across the week rather than stacking deadlifts, rows and back extensions into one session. Two moderate exposures usually produce more progress than one that leaves the client too sore to train legs two days later.

Is it bad to round your back when lifting?
Not inherently. Spines are made to flex, and strong lifters routinely pull with some upper-back rounding. What causes problems is loading a position the tissue has not been prepared for. Are back extensions safe for someone with back pain?
Often yes, and they are a common part of rebuilding tolerance, but it depends entirely on the person and the diagnosis. Start with body weight, a short range and a slow tempo, and stop if it provokes symptoms. Persistent or radiating back pain should be assessed by a clinician before you program around it.
How often can the erectors be trained?
They already work in most compound lifts, so direct work twice a week is usually enough. Because they fatigue quickly and recover slowly, spreading deadlifts, rows and extensions across separate days works better than putting all the erector load in one session.
