Girth Measurements

Girth measurements are body circumferences taken with a tape measure at standardised sites such as the waist, hips, chest, arms and thighs. They are directly measured rather than estimated, which makes them the most reliable low-cost way to track body shape change.

Girth Measurements: what are they?

A tape measure is the least impressive tool in a coach's kit and one of the most useful. Unlike every body composition method, a girth is not an estimate: there is no equation, no reference population and no assumption between the tape and the number. Thirty-eight centimetres is thirty-eight centimetres. That means the only error is your technique, and technique is something you can fix. It also means a girth history is directly comparable across years in a way that a body fat percentage from three different devices never will be.

The standard sites

You do not need all of these on every client. Pick a set that answers the questions the client's goal actually asks, write down which sites you chose and where exactly you placed the tape, and never change them mid-engagement.

Tape technique

Almost all girth error comes from tape tension and tape position. The tape should sit snug against the skin without indenting it, and it must be parallel to the floor at the site, which is harder than it sounds on a thigh or a sloping waist. A flexible non-stretch tape or a spring-loaded tension tape both work; a stretched-out fabric tape does not.

  • Measure on bare skin or a single thin layer, never over a waistband or bulky clothing.
  • Take every measurement on the same side of the body, right side by convention.
  • Take two readings per site and average them. A third if they differ by more than about a centimetre.
  • Rotate through the sites rather than repeating one site back to back.
  • Client stands relaxed, weight even, breathing normally, at the end of a normal exhale.
  • Same tester every time. Two coaches will place the tape differently.

Tracking a composite sum

Individual sites bounce around for reasons that are not fat or muscle: a thigh measured slightly higher, a waist measured after a large meal. Adding several sites into a single sum smooths that noise out, in the same way that a sum of skinfolds is more stable than any one fold.

A common approach is to sum the sites that respond to fat loss, typically waist, hips and chest, and track that total, while keeping arm and thigh girths separate as muscle gain markers. A client whose fat sum is falling while their arm and thigh girths hold or rise is recomposing, and you can show them that in two lines without ever quoting a body fat percentage.

Why girths beat body fat estimates for tracking

A body fat percentage carries measurement error plus equation error plus device error. A girth carries measurement error only. Over a twelve-week block, a four-centimetre drop in waist circumference is a fact, whereas a three point drop in an estimated body fat percentage might be a fact or might be the client having drunk more water than last time.

Girths are also the measurement clients understand without explanation, they cost nothing, they take five minutes, and they work on every client regardless of body size, where calipers stop working at higher body fat levels. If you only do one form of body tracking, do this one.
